  1. Chesterfield Monthly Meeting (Swarthmore, PA: Swarthmore College Quaker Meeting Records Friends Historical Library) Minutes, 1659–1885, p. 36. This date contradicts the widely accepted date of birth of 23 Jan 1730. Joseph Hewes' parents were Quakers and the Monthly Meeting of Quakers at Chesterfield records his birthday as 28th day of the 4th mo 1730. Prior to 1752 March was the first month of the year. Since this is by the „Old Style“ Julian Calendar we must add 11 days so that date translates to 9 July 1730 in the „New Style“ or Gregorian Calendar adopted in 1752 in Britain and the British colonies. The records of the Chesterfield MM were not transcribed into the widely available Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy so these records have been difficult to access until now.
